New drop-in service will help BME mums

A charity set up to support communities by promoting diversity and equality will next week launch a new service aimed at helping new mums from ethnic minorities.
ONEHumber will hold its first drop-in service to provide support for women who have recently had children and are from black and minority ethnic communities. It will take place at Marvell House Children’s Centre in Crambourne Street, Hull, from 10am until 11.30am on Wednesday August 17.
ONEHumber was launched earlier this year and is involved in supporting minority groups through the Hull LGBT Social Network and through its work with the Hull and East Riding Equality Network.
Kiran Johnson, the strategic manager of the charity, said: “There are some projects which provide support for new mums but they are almost impossible to access for people who don’t speak or read English.
“We work with the Fenchurch Cluster Children’s Centre and with Hull Clinical Commissioning Group and we have organised a drop-in for new mums from an ethnic minority background so they can learn some English, get the support they need and socialise with ladies from their own community.
“We are distributing leaflets through religious centres and children’s centres and voluntary networks, and we are also asking people for their help in communicating information about the service to people who cannot speak and read English.”
